Project Background
When I received the commission to design a luxury villa in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, I knew this would be one of the most culturally significant projects of my career. The client, a successful businessman, had a clear vision: a home that honors Islamic architectural traditions while embracing contemporary comfort and technology.
This project challenged me to deeply understand the principles of Islamic design—geometric patterns, the interplay of light and shadow, the importance of privacy and hospitality. Design Philosophy: Honoring Tradition, Embracing Modernity
Islamic architecture is not merely decorative—it embodies deep spiritual and cultural values. My design philosophy for this villa centered on three core principles:

Islamic geometric patterns represent infinity and the divine order of the universe. Throughout the villa, I incorporated these sacred geometries—in ceiling designs, floor mosaics, and mashrabiya screens. The patterns are not random decoration but carefully calculated mathematical expressions that create visual harmony and spiritual resonance.
2. Light and Shadow: Creating Atmosphere
Traditional Islamic architecture masterfully manipulates light through mashrabiya screens, creating ever-changing patterns throughout the day. I designed the villa to capture this essence—filtered sunlight creates intricate shadow patterns on marble floors, while evening brings warm ambient lighting from brass lanterns and crystal chandeliers.
3. Privacy and Hospitality: The Dual Nature of Arabian Homes
Arabian homes traditionally balance private family spaces with generous hospitality areas. The majlis (formal reception room) is designed to impress and welcome guests, while family quarters remain secluded. This duality guided my spatial planning throughout the villa.
Space Planning: Two-Story Layout with Courtyard
The villa spans approximately 800 square meters across two floors, organized around a central courtyard—a traditional element that provides natural ventilation and a private outdoor oasis:
Ground Floor: Public and Entertainment Spaces
The ground floor houses the majlis, living room, dining room, kitchen, and access to the courtyard and pool area. These spaces flow into each other while maintaining distinct identities, perfect for entertaining guests.
Upper Floor: Private Family Quarters
The upper floor contains the master suite, children's bedrooms, family living area, and a private terrace overlooking the courtyard. This separation ensures family privacy while guests are entertained below.
Outdoor Spaces: Courtyard, Pool, and Gardens
The central courtyard features a traditional fountain, while the rear of the property includes an infinity pool with cabanas. Palm trees and native plants create a desert oasis atmosphere.
Design Decisions: Room by Room
The Majlis: Heart of Arabian Hospitality
The majlis is the soul of any Arabian home—a space where guests are welcomed with the utmost hospitality. My design decisions here were guided by tradition while incorporating modern comfort:
- Seating: Low, plush seating arranged along the walls in traditional style, upholstered in rich fabrics
- Lighting: Grand crystal chandelier as centerpiece, complemented by brass wall sconces
- Details: Gold leaf accents, Arabic calligraphy art, and intricate ceiling patterns
Living Room: Family Gathering Space
While the majlis serves formal occasions, the living room is designed for family comfort. Here I balanced Islamic aesthetics with contemporary furniture—plush sofas, a modern entertainment center concealed within traditional cabinetry, and softer lighting for relaxation.
Dining Room: Elegant Entertaining
The dining room features a grand table with gold inlay, surrounded by velvet chairs in royal blue. The coffered ceiling with Islamic geometric patterns creates an intimate yet impressive atmosphere for family meals and dinner parties.
Master Bedroom: Private Sanctuary
The master bedroom balances opulence with tranquility. The ornate gold headboard serves as a focal point, while silk bedding in deep burgundy creates warmth. Mashrabiya screens filter morning light, and the color palette promotes restful sleep.
Kitchen: Modern Function, Traditional Beauty
The kitchen presented a unique challenge: integrating modern appliances with Islamic aesthetics. The solution was custom cabinetry with gold handles, a mosaic tile backsplash in traditional patterns, and a brass range hood that echoes Arabian metalwork.
Courtyard: The Heart of the Home
The central courtyard is a traditional element that provides natural cooling and a private outdoor sanctuary. The mosaic-tiled fountain creates soothing sounds, while arched colonnades provide shaded seating areas. Evening brass lanterns transform the space into a magical retreat.
Exterior: First Impressions
The exterior facade makes a statement of refined elegance. White stone walls reflect the desert sun, while the grand entrance door with intricate carvings welcomes visitors. Mashrabiya screens on upper windows provide privacy while adding architectural interest.
Pool Area: Desert Oasis
The pool area creates a resort-like atmosphere within the private compound. The infinity pool features blue and gold mosaic tiles, while poolside cabanas with Arabic cushions provide shaded relaxation. Evening string lights create an enchanting atmosphere for outdoor entertaining.

This perspective view reveals how all spaces work together as a cohesive whole. The Islamic design language flows consistently throughout—from the grand majlis to the intimate bedrooms, from the functional kitchen to the serene courtyard. Every element has been carefully considered to create a home that is both culturally authentic and thoroughly modern.
